HOT OFF THE PRESS!

HOT OFF THE PRESS!

We attended the recent Allergy & Gluten Free Show at Olympia between 12/6/9 & 14/6/9. We actually sold out all our products bar a handful of cakes by close of play on the second day. The remainder of products were sold by 11.30am and we were able to start the long journey home to Wensleydale shortly after midday.

Our new bread continues to fly out. We have actually got to the stage where we cannot bake it quick enough. Certainly worth a try.

We are very proud to announce that we have again been successful in the Foods Matter 2009 Free From Awards. We retained the winner spot in the Cakes, Muffins & Sweet Biscuits category with a joint first place with another Carrot Cake.(Our Coffee & Walnut sponge won this category in 2008). In fact the other Carrot Cake just shaded us into second place in the overall competition for the Fair Trophy. Our Xmas Cake and Bread & Butter pudding both were Highly Commended in their respective categories. See http://www.freefromfoodawards.co.uk/ for the list of winners.

200 'Free From' products were nominated for the final shortlist and we feel, that to come a very, very close second to the overall winner is testament to the fact our products are simply quite delicious. Indeed prior to the presentation by celebrity chef Antony Worral-Thompson it was explained that the judges were split regarding the two carrot cakes as to which was the best. Whilst it was a tie in the gluten free cake category the other carrot cake was given the Fair trophy as it had a better decoration topping i.e. it had pecan nuts thereon. We are still very pleased to be so close to the overall winner.

Also we have just launched the first part of our range of gluten, wheat and dairy free bread. It is quite delicious, and so much better than what we have so far tasted. You can buy our white bread and rolls today. We will shortly be following this with some similar white seeded loaves and rolls. We are so pleased with the results we have entered the bread in the Guild Of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards 2009.

Our Values

Our Values

We are dedicated to providing great tasting gluten, wheat and dairy free food, which is also additive and preservative free, and simply delicious.
To this end all staff strictly adhere to a gluten free diet throughout their working day in order to make every possible effort to prevent cross contamination of any sort. Following the recent government guidelines reducing the threshold below which you can call your products 'gluten free' from 200parts per million(ppm)to 20ppm we recognise the need to have a disciplined regime. Codex analysis revealed that our reading was classed as below 5ppm. In reality no trace could be found so a limit has to be set at below 5ppm.

The Story So Far

The Story So Far

The bakery began in 2005 when the founder of the business, Sue Powell, a qualified chef, became aware of the problems that individuals with Coeliac Disease faced in sourcing decent, edible gluten free foods. This became a challenge and she set about experimenting with various flours and devised a range of recipes. A purpose built bakery was built at Sue, and her partner, Dave Fleming's home in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. Her products quickly became in great demand and the bakery rapidly became too small. New larger premises were obtained in 2006 which in turn became too small and the business moved for a third time to the present location in Hawes in 2007.

Ably supported by her mother and father, Janet and Brian Powell, the Gluten Free Kitchen began to gather momentum. Along the way Sue started collecting gold awards for her puddings in the Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards of 2006 and earlier this year won first prize for her Coffee & Walnut cake in the Foods Matter Gluten Free Awards 2008 category of gluten free cakes, muffins and puddings. The staff levels increased with the addition of Margaret Jones and Catherine Madley in 2007. Due to increased productivity Dave also resigned from his full time employment in 2007 taking over responsibility for the general management of the business.

The number of outlets supplied has grown considerably as has the thriving mail order/on line shopping aspect of the business. Customer care and after sales service are important to our business as we understand that customers will not return if we cannot deliver. Our big boast is that 'You cannot tell the difference'. Indeed success in 'open' competition proves that we are certainly going some way to getting that right.
